I remember Wayang Satu. We would sometime get groceries from the Chinese grocery store, Nam Seng. He also operated a grocer’s shop in a Volkswagen van, that would stop by at 373 & 2 to sell his produce. The Foo housewives would buy odds & ends from him. A good service. I remember too the Indian shop - they sold stationery & I went to buy green crepe paper to make Christmas decorations. Yes, the wooden bridge over the drain to get to the stores were rickety. Wayang Satu was one of the first areas to be flooded during heavy rain. Yes, remember too the police station.
There was also a bicycle repair or other shop of sorts. That I do not remember clearly. Some of our other family members will probably remember.
If I wanted a little distraction, I would get off the Green Bus on the way home at Wayang Satu instead of at the bus stop outside the house next to 373, which house number I cannot remember. When walking back from the bus stop at Steven’s Road, would also go by Wayang Satu on the way home.
Steven’s Road had much less traffic. I would sometimes go there for evening walks with Pui Hoon & I remember her taking me once to visit one of her friends living there. It was a joy to walk along the road with its Flame of the Forests Trees in bright orange, pick red seeds & collect the dried brown knife -like leaves from a tree o the ground. Those we would us to chase each other with a view to playfully “knife” each other. Would anyone know what they were ?
